About The School
Bereton Montessori Nursery and Primary School is a private, mixed-sex education school in Rivers State, Nigeria. The school has campuses in Old GRA and Stadium Road in Port Harcourt. As its name suggests, the school consists of a nursery and primary school approved by the Rivers State government.
Bereton Montessori was founded by Dale’s daughter, Victoria Diete Spiff. The school opened on the 10th of September 1978 as a nursery school. At its inception, the school had about 120 pupils in eight classrooms. It was upgraded with a primary school on January 1983.
Bereton Montessori is affiliated with Charles Dale Memorial International School, a secondary boarding school located in the city of Port Harcourt, Nigeria. At present, it holds 400 students. It is located at no. 12 Army Range Road, Igwuruta-Eneka.
The leadership of Bereton Montessori Nursery and Primary School, in conjunction with the school’s 25th anniversary in 2003, elected to open a secondary school. This would allow students to continue their education at the secondary level. Groundbreaking of the school was held in 2004; construction included modern classrooms, science labs, computer labs with internet access, sport fields, a library, and student and staff housing. The school opened to students on 30 September 2006.
The school is named in memory of Charles Dale for his contributions to education in Nigeria. The school’s founder, Chief Victoria O. R. Diete-Spiff, is Dale’s daughter.
Bereton Montessori is strategically built in the heart of the city particularly in government residential areas, this makes it easy for the school not to try too hard for clients as it is mostly clients who are financially capable that can enroll their wards there.
Staff Strength
Bereton Montessori have over 300 staff members with highly qualified and professional teachers.The school provides well equipped offices for its staff and there are desks in each classroom where any teacher that comes in to teach, sits till his/her period ends. The workers are well mannered and friendly starting right from the security post. Brief interaction with the security men shows good interpersonal skills.
Students
The students in Bereton are well groomed and neatly clothed in their school uniforms. The school has achieved a lot over the years in the area of academic performance where their students go for top competitions and come out in flying colours.
Facilities
Bereton School has air conditioning facilities in basically all corners of the building thereby creating a very cool and serene environment for learning. The school has a functional science laboratory, a well equipped music class, a creative art class and a home economics laboratory where students interested in local and intercontinental dishes are extensively taught.
It also has sports facilities for students interested in different sports such as basket ball,badminton,football and others. Also, the school has a large sandy playground where those in nursery and primary section play during their break period.
The school also has a television, a projector and audio system where toddlers in creche can view and sing along to visual songs played.They also have well equipped libraries for nursery,primary and secondary school sections. There are cleaners who oversee the convenience section of the school in order to ensure that the students do not leave them messy. The classrooms all have modern furniture which give them a foreign look.
Alumni
One of the notable alumni of Bereton Montessori school is former Miss World and top fashion designer,Agbani Darego.
In conclusion, The school is basically for the high and middle class and may not be affordable for an average income earning family. Also, the school management need to ensure that more attention is paid to the convenience area particularly for girls.
Bereton Montessori is a good school and in rating, it should have 8 over 10.
