Nigeria’s young swimmers, Omolola Tobiloba Akinsanmi and Aidan Dumuje-Abili, began their campaigns at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games on Sunday, competing in the women’s and men’s 100m butterfly events.
Akinsanmi finished sixth in Heat 2 of the women’s 100m butterfly, recording a time of 1:15.69.
In the men’s event, Dumuje-Abili placed fifth in Heat 2 with a time of 59.73 seconds.
Although neither swimmer finished among the leading competitors in their respective heats, both will have further opportunities to represent Nigeria as the swimming programme continues.
Dumuje-Abili, a student of Grange International School, is among the young athletes representing the country at the Games, which bring together emerging talents from around the world across several sporting disciplines.
Nigeria’s swimming contingent also includes Kristabel Chisa Oldeide and Kashope Obatoyinbo.
The Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games began with the opening ceremony on October 31, with swimming events scheduled to run from November 1 to 6.
The Nigerian swimmers will now look to build on their opening-day experience as they continue their participation in the competition.
