Manchester United have reportedly identified Unai Emery and Julian Nagelsmann as leading candidates to replace Michael Carrick if the club decides to dismiss the Englishman following a disappointing start to the season.
Carrick is under mounting pressure after United suffered a 4-1 defeat to Como in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, further intensifying scrutiny of his position at Old Trafford. The club have managed just two wins in 11 matches across competitions, according to reports.
Despite the growing uncertainty, Carrick is expected to remain in charge for Sunday’s Premier League meeting with Bournemouth at Old Trafford.
Emery, who currently manages Aston Villa, is among the coaches admired by United’s hierarchy. The Spaniard has built a strong reputation through his work in European football, but securing his services could prove difficult given his contract with Villa, which runs until 2029.
Nagelsmann is another prominent name under consideration. The German previously managed Bayern Munich and the Germany national team, guiding the national side to the quarter-finals of Euro 2024. He is also reportedly highly regarded by United’s recruitment leadership.
United’s interest in potential replacements comes amid mounting concerns over the team’s performances. The defeat to Como followed a difficult run of results and increased attention on Carrick’s tactical decisions.
The manager’s immediate focus, however, remains on Sunday’s fixture against Bournemouth, as United look to respond to their European setback.
No decision to dismiss Carrick has been confirmed, and Emery and Nagelsmann remain reported candidates should the club opt for a change in leadership.
