The Rivers State Ministry of Education has condemned reports that female students of Government Comprehensive High School (Senior Secondary), Taabaa, in Khana Local Government Area were subjected to forced virginity testing. It has also launched an investigation.
In a statement dated October 22, 2026, signed by Permanent Secretary Dr. Mina Tele Ikuru on behalf of the Commissioner for Education, the ministry said persons claiming to act for a traditional institution in the community visited the school. They allegedly selected students for virginity testing under the guise of offering scholarships and exercise books.
On Thursday, September 17, 2026, 16 female students were allegedly selected for the exercise. The students reportedly objected and staged a peaceful protest.

The ministry called the allegations “extremely serious and disturbing,” saying they concern the dignity, privacy and fundamental rights of schoolchildren. It stressed that no individual, traditional institution, community body or private organisation has the authority to subject students to virginity testing or any other form of abuse.
It added that scholarships and school materials must be provided transparently and without conditions that compromise beneficiaries’ safety or rights.
The ministry said it will take “all appropriate action,” including referral to relevant authorities, against anyone found to be involved. It cautioned all persons and traditional institutions to stop any activity involving the selection or testing of female students for virginity.
It also directed all schools in the state to uphold child-protection standards and to ensure no student is subjected to degrading, coercive or invasive practices in the name of tradition, scholarships, discipline or community projects.
The ministry assured students, parents and guardians that their concerns are being taken seriously.
