The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Olakunle Nafiu, has urged corps members deployed to Rivers State to participate actively in orientation camp activities and take advantage of skills acquisition programmes to build sustainable livelihoods.
Nafiu gave the charge on Monday while addressing members of the 2026 Batch C Stream I at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Nonwa-Gbam, Tai Local Government Area of Rivers State.
He encouraged the corps members to adapt positively to the camp’s rigorous activities, noting that the experience would help prepare them for leadership responsibilities and equip them with the skills needed to contribute meaningfully to national development.
The NYSC director-general specifically urged them to take the in-camp and post-camp Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme seriously, describing it as an avenue to create sustainable wealth through multiple income streams.
He also advised the corps members to remain security-conscious, avoid night travel and refrain from misusing social media or engaging in activities that could expose them to danger.

On the forthcoming 2027 general elections, Nafiu urged corps members to remain apolitical and uphold the principles of honesty, credibility and professionalism while serving as ad hoc staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
He reiterated the need for corps members to demonstrate integrity and maintain high ethical standards in the discharge of their responsibilities.
Nafiu further disclosed that the Federal Government had approved an upward review of corps members’ feeding allowances during orientation camp. He added that measures to improve the quality of corps members’ kits had been activated for implementation in 2027.
Meanwhile, the NYSC Coordinator in Rivers State, Moses Oleghe, announced that Governor Siminalayi Fubara had approved an immediate increase in the allowances paid to corps members serving in the state.
According to Oleghe, corps members posted to urban areas would receive ₦20,000, while those serving in rural communities would receive ₦35,000.
He described the increase as one of the milestones recorded by the Fubara administration in supporting corps members and improving their welfare.
Oleghe also presented a report on the state of the orientation camp as part of activities marking the NYSC director-general’s visit to the facility.
