Rivers United technical manager Finidi George has praised his team’s away form after they drew with Abia Warriors in their goalless encounter in the 2026/2027 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season.
The Pride of Rivers maintained their unbeaten run at the NPFL and stayed in the race for the crown after the stalemate on Sunday in the Matchday Eight encounter at the Enyimba International Stadium in Aba.
Speaking after the game, Finidi praised his defenders for their display but revealed the challenge of fixture congestion was beginning to catch up with them.
The ex-Super Eagles winger further revealed Rivers United had done well to remain unbeaten in the league despite being dumped out of this year’s CAF Champions League.
He warned that their physical workload meant they would have to be extremely careful with the defenders in their ranks and consider other options capable of laying the same defensive foundations.
The draw leaves Rivers United second in the league table with 16 points, just one point behind the league leaders Rangers International with 17 points.
Finidi reminded his players that it was always vital to collect points on the road, having fallen just one point short of winning the league title last season.
The Rivers coach asserted every point would prove decisive when the campaign got to its finishing line.
Recalling Rivers United’s performance in Sunday’s draw, Finidi described their display in the second half as “inconsistent”.
While they had the majority of the ball, they failed to fashion out a winning goal as he felt their challenge faded in the face of a difficult Aba encounter.
He added that they always knew it would not be easy to get anything from a tough Aba crowd, but getting a point from such a vibrant and intimidating atmosphere was always a bonus.
Finidi insisted his side would use the point to consolidate their position as they continue to chase the NPFL title.
Rivers United are next away to Barau FC on October 18, as the Port Harcourt-based club looks to continue their unbeaten streak and stay in the hunt for the league crown.
