The family of Joy, who died following a gas explosion in Bille, Rivers State, is yet to receive a condolence visit from the state government, days after her death.
The concern was raised by Social Action following a visit to the bereaved family in Kpor, where the organisation reported that no government representative had visited since her passing.
It recalled that the government had facilitated Joy’s evacuation to a medical facility when she was critically injured in the explosion but expressed concern over the absence of a visit to her family after her death.
The organisation disclosed that the family had given its consent for legal action to seek accountability and address the environmental and public health concerns affecting Bille.

“Joy is gone. Her family remains. Bille remains in danger,” it stated.
It also questioned why the source of the gas had not been fully established and why repeated warnings had failed to trigger urgent action to protect residents.
The organisation called on the Rivers State and Federal Governments to visit the bereaved family, provide medical and psychological support for Joy’s mother, investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and take immediate steps to safeguard the community.
It stressed the need for concrete action to prevent further harm, adding that the family deserved compassion and Bille residents deserved lasting solutions, justice and accountability.
