TMS Advocates Continuity in Tinubu’s Reform Policies

The Tinubu Must Stay (TMS) pressure group has called for continuity in President Bola Tinubu’s reform agenda, arguing that the policies require sustained implementation to achieve their intended long-term results.

The group’s National Convener, Alhaji Ibrahim Uba, made the call in a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja while reflecting on Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.

Uba said TMS would advocate continuity “peacefully, factually and democratically”, adding that the anniversary offered an opportunity to assess Nigeria’s progress in building strong institutions and responsibly managing its resources.

He said the Tinubu administration inherited significant fiscal, monetary, security and social challenges when it assumed office on May 29, 2023, and responded with major policy changes, including the removal of petrol subsidy and reforms in the foreign exchange market.

According to him, the reforms came with significant economic costs for households, particularly through higher living, transportation and energy expenses.

He, however, urged Nigerians to assess the administration based on measurable outcomes, remaining challenges and the long-term objectives of its policies.

Uba said TMS would focus on explaining government policies, highlighting documented programmes and projects, addressing misinformation and creating opportunities for citizens to examine the government’s record.

He said the group planned to use digital explainers, community dialogues, youth engagements, media partnerships, expert analysis and citizens’ testimonies to achieve its objectives.

According to him, the approach would help make complex government policies easier for Nigerians to understand, question and debate.

Uba identified economic growth and other key indicators as some of the measures through which the administration’s performance could be assessed.

He cited data from the National Bureau of Statistics showing that Nigeria’s real Gross Domestic Product grew by 4.43 per cent in the second quarter of 2026, compared with 4.23 per cent in the same quarter of 2025 and 3.89 per cent in the first quarter of 2026.

He also said headline inflation stood at 15.39 per cent in August, a marginal decline from 15.43 per cent recorded in July.

Uba noted, however, that the Consumer Price Index was still rising, meaning that households continued to face higher prices, although the rate of increase had slowed.

On education, he said the Nigerian Education Loan Fund had reported that more than 1.5 million students had benefited from its loan scheme by June, with over ₦282 billion disbursed.

He also said the 3 Million Technical Talent programme had trained more than 160,000 fellows across three cohorts, while about 1.87 million people were registered in its wider pipeline.

According to him, the trained fellows were contributing to areas including healthcare delivery, accountability and health-sector reforms.

On housing, Uba said the Renewed Hope Housing Programme and Federal Housing Authority projects had delivered more than 10,000 housing units across the country, with over 300,000 jobs projected or linked to the programme.

He also highlighted the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles, noting that the programme had more than 400 certified conversion centres and over 90 refuelling stations.

He acknowledged that a key challenge was ensuring the growing CNG infrastructure resulted in significant and widespread reductions in transportation costs.

On agriculture, Uba said government interventions had covered fertiliser distribution, improved seedlings, mechanisation, irrigation, financing and market access, with millions of farmers reached through various programmes.

He also said security operations against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, oil theft and other violent crimes had been intensified.

According to him, the operations had produced improvements in security in different parts of the country, although he acknowledged that the ultimate measure should be whether citizens feel safer.

Uba urged Nigerians to examine competing claims against available evidence, while continuing to question government, verify information, scrutinise policies and demand measurable results.
