President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has promised to expand digital connectivity and invest in skills development as part of his administration’s plan to create more opportunities for young Nigerians and strengthen the country’s participation in the modern economy.
Tinubu made the pledge in his Independence Day address to Nigerians on Wednesday, where he outlined his administration’s next phase of economic policy under the theme, “From Reforms to Prosperity.”
The president said Nigeria’s large young population could become a major source of economic strength if young people are provided with the skills, infrastructure and opportunities required to participate productively in the economy.
According to him, the government will expand digital connectivity into communities that have waited too long to participate in the modern economy, with the aim of bringing more Nigerians into the digital space.
Tinubu also said his administration would invest in the skills employers demand, linking skills development to its broader plan to create productive work and support businesses across the country.
He said the government would support Nigerian businesses with the infrastructure and financing needed to grow, while expanding digital access to enable more people to participate in economic activities.
The president said he wanted to see more young Nigerians build successful businesses and create opportunities for others in the country, specifically expressing his desire to see Nigerian youths build technology companies capable of attaining unicorn status.
Tinubu also referred to access to digital devices while discussing CREDICORP, saying the consumer credit programme would allow working Nigerians to acquire vehicles, solar systems, digital devices and other essential assets without having to save for years.
He said the government’s objective was to create an economy where young Nigerians could turn their talent, energy and ambition into productive work, businesses and innovations that contribute to Nigeria’s growth
