Rivers State has joined the global community in marking World Tourism Day 2026, with stakeholders highlighting the potential of digital innovation and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to transform the tourism sector.
The event, held at Hotel Presidential in Port Harcourt, was themed “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism,” with the sub-theme, “Providing Innovative Solutions for Tourism Development in Rivers State Using AI.”
The celebration brought together government officials, tourism practitioners, technology experts, industry stakeholders, young innovators and other players in the tourism and creative sectors for discussions on the future of tourism in the state.
In his welcome address, the Permanent Secretary of the Rivers State Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Freddy Ndigbara, emphasised the need for the state to embrace innovation and emerging technologies to unlock its tourism potential.
The event featured a keynote lecture titled “Digital Agenda and AI to Redesign Tourism,” delivered by Sir Dr. Honour Sirawo, mni, and represented by Dr. Christian Davies.
The lecture examined the opportunities presented by digital technology and Artificial Intelligence in improving tourism experiences, promoting destinations and creating new opportunities within the industry.
A panel discussion was also held, focusing on practical and innovative ways AI could be deployed to support tourism development in Rivers State.

The panel featured the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of ICT, Mrs. Aleruchi Akani; the Chief Executive Officer of Digital Arts Technologies, Mr. Julius Daniels; and Mr. Ignatius Chukwu.
A major highlight of the celebration was the presentation of prizes to winners of the School Essay and Youth AI Competition.
The competition recognised young people for their contributions to discussions on technology, innovation and the future of tourism.
Miss Thompson Comfort Samuel of Community Secondary School, Amadi-Ama, emerged first, while Miss Olivia Chika of Holy Rosary Secondary School came second. Miss Weli Emmanuella of Archdeacon Brown Education Center (ABEC) took third position.
The recognition of the young participants highlighted the importance of equipping the next generation with digital skills and providing platforms for young people to contribute ideas towards the development of the tourism industry.
The event was chaired by Engr. Goodlife Nmekini, MCPN, while the Director-General of Rivers State Tourism and Chief Executive Officer of Seki Culture, Mr. Yibo Koko, was among the dignitaries in attendance.
The celebration provided an opportunity for stakeholders to explore how technology and AI can be harnessed to promote Rivers State’s tourism destinations, improve visitor experiences, and create new opportunities for young people and businesses in the sector.
