Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle has clarified the circumstances surrounding goalkeeper Maduka Okoye’s late arrival at the team’s training camp ahead of Friday’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Madagascar.
Okoye linked up with the squad in Uyo on Thursday after receiving permission from the coaching crew to delay his arrival due to personal and family commitments.
The Udinese goalkeeper was the last player to report to camp as the Super Eagles concluded preparations for their opening AFCON qualifying fixture.
Speculation had surrounded Okoye’s whereabouts after he was seen in Milan, Italy, alongside American rapper Cardi B before joining the national team camp.
However, Chelle dismissed any concerns over the goalkeeper’s commitment, insisting that the player had informed the coaching staff of his situation and was granted approval for the delayed arrival.
Okoye’s arrival means Chelle now has a full complement of players available for selection as Nigeria begins its quest for qualification to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Super Eagles will take on Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, before travelling to face Guinea-Bissau in their second Group L fixture.
