Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has reportedly converted to Islam after reciting the Shahadah in Doha, Qatar.
The 33-year-old defender, who currently plays for Qatar Stars League side Al-Ahli, is said to have embraced the faith in the Qatari capital, according to local media reports.
A video shared by Islamic scholar Dr Muhammad Salah on his verified Facebook page showed Troost-Ekong reciting the Islamic declaration of faith.
Troost-Ekong began his football journey in the Arab region in 2024 when he joined Saudi Arabian club Al-Khaleej. He later moved to Qatar, signing an 18-month contract with Al-Ahli in January 2026.
Since arriving at the club, the centre-back has made 14 appearances across all competitions, including one outing this season.
On the international stage, Troost-Ekong enjoyed a distinguished career with the Super Eagles, representing Nigeria between 2015 and 2025. During that period, he earned 83 caps and scored eight goals, establishing himself as one of the country’s most dependable defenders.
He played a key role in Nigeria’s run to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, where he was named the tournament’s Best Player.
Troost-Ekong also represented Nigeria at the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most experienced defenders of his generation.
