OPay, a digital financial services provider, is expanding its role beyond payments by using technology, partnerships and corporate resources to support education, youth innovation and women’s economic empowerment in Nigeria.
The company’s social impact initiatives include the OPay Scholars Programme, Play4aChild initiative and Women Empowerment Programme, which have collectively reached thousands of Nigerians.
Under its OPay Scholars Programme, which includes the National Innovation Challenge and OPay Futures, the company has committed ₦1.2 billion over 10 years to scholarships. More than 1,200 direct beneficiaries have so far been reached through the scholarship commitment.
The National Innovation Challenge, implemented in partnership with Google and the 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) programme, is focused on young Nigerians with technological skills and ideas aimed at solving real-world problems. The initiative seeks to encourage young people to move from simply consuming technology to becoming creators and problem-solvers.
OPay’s Play4aChild initiative is another major component of its social impact efforts. Since its inception, the programme has reached more than 14,000 direct beneficiaries by providing educational materials and other interventions designed to improve children’s learning experiences.
The fintech company has also focused on women’s economic empowerment. Through its Women Empowerment Programme, more than 100 women have received skills development, capacity-building and startup support aimed at helping them strengthen their businesses and generate sustainable income.
The initiatives reflect a broader approach to financial inclusion that goes beyond access to digital financial services to include education, skills development and economic opportunities.
Through its technology platforms and partnerships, OPay says it is seeking to use its reach to create measurable social outcomes and contribute to opportunities for Nigerians across different stages of life.
