The Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED) has installed electricity meters in seven public schools across Rivers State as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility initiative.
The intervention covers Model Secondary School, GRA; Pabod Model Secondary School, Bernard Carr; Community Comprehensive Secondary School, Rumuokrushi; Community Comprehensive Secondary School, Rukpokwu; Township Model Primary School 2, Moscow Road; Government Secondary School, Borokiri; and Government Secondary School, Umusoya.
PHED said the initiative is designed to promote safer electricity use, improve learning conditions and reduce the financial burden associated with accumulated electricity bills.
The company’s Head of Communications, Mrs Olubukola Olawale, said PHED had also waived outstanding electricity debts owed by the beneficiary schools.

According to her, the decision was taken to prevent the schools’ previous debts from being transferred to the new metering accounts.
Olawale disclosed that over N1.5 million owed by Model Secondary School, GRA, had been written off, while Government Secondary School, Borokiri, received a waiver covering a debt of about N500,000.
The principals of the beneficiary schools reportedly welcomed the development, saying the intervention would ease financial pressure and contribute to a more conducive environment for teaching and learning.
PHED also conducted training for designated school staff on the proper use, operation, and management of the newly installed meters.
