Falconets Battle England for U-20 World Cup Quarter-Final Spot

Nigeria’s Falconets will take on England in the Round of 16 of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Poland 2026 on Thursday, September 17.

The highly anticipated clash is scheduled to take place at Stadion Miejski Bielsko-Biała, with kick-off at 3:00 p.m. local time in Poland (2:00 p.m. Nigerian time).

The Falconets, under head coach Moses Aduku, booked their place in the knockout stage in emphatic fashion, thrashing New Caledonia 10-1 in their final Group F fixture.

Nigeria had earlier suffered a defeat to Spain and played out a goalless draw against China before sealing qualification with their convincing victory over New Caledonia.

The Falconets boast an impressive record in the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, having reached the final twice. They finished as runners-up in 2010 and 2022 but are yet to win the competition.

England also progressed to the knockout stage after finishing second in Group B. The Young Lionesses opened their campaign with a 5-1 victory over Tanzania before suffering a 2-1 defeat to Brazil.

Rachel Maltby emerged as one of England’s standout players in the group stage, scoring a hat-trick in the win over Tanzania.

Previous Meetings

Nigeria and England have met several times at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.

Their first two encounters, in 2008 and 2010, ended in 1-1 draws. Nigeria claimed a 2-1 victory when the sides met again in 2014.

In that 2014 encounter, Loveth Ayila scored Nigeria’s equaliser before Asisat Oshoala converted a penalty to secure the win for the Falconets.

Thursday’s encounter promises another competitive battle, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.
