The Rivers State Primary Health Care Management Board has urged residents to be cautious following reports of rising diphtheria cases in some parts of the country.
The board, in a public health advisory, called on residents to seek medical attention promptly if they develop symptoms associated with the disease.It identified high fever, severe sore throat, persistent cough, catarrh and other flu-like symptoms as signs that should not be ignored.
The board advised residents who experience these symptoms, or notice them in others, to visit the nearest health facility for proper examination and treatment.It also encouraged the public to observe basic hygiene practices, including covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing and washing hands regularly with soap and water.
The board further appealed to parents and caregivers to ensure that children receive all routine vaccinations under Nigeria’s free Expanded Programme on Immunisation, EPI, schedule.It said vaccination remains the most effective protection against diphtheria and other diseases that can be prevented through immunisation.
The board urged residents to share the information with family members and within their communities to increase awareness and protect vulnerable people from the disease.It stressed that early recognition of symptoms and timely medical intervention could prevent serious complications and save lives.
