Manyo Eager to Lead Rivers United Captain Stephen Manyo has expressed gratitude for his appointment as captain of Rivers United, pledging to lead with discipline and maturity throughout the season.
The centre-back was appointed captain of the Pride of Rivers for the 2026/27 season, and he said he is proud to fly the colours of one of Nigeria’s top clubs. “I feel great captaining this distinguished club.

Both in Nigeria and Africa, I feel happy as a person,” Manyo told club media. Manyo confessed that the honour brings great responsibilities, especially in turbulent moments when the results are not forthcoming.

The captain said players are often looking to him whenever the team is in crisis. “There will be a lot of pressure because when the boys are not doing well, they come back to the captain.
‘What are you guys doing?’
So for me, I feel the pressure will be there, but this is my job,” said Manyo. The defender further noted that a captain must always keep his cool, adding that players find some inspiration in the way a leader handles things on and off the pitch.
“As the captain, I have to try as much as possible to be calm because if I’m not calm, the boys cannot be calm. In troubled times, when things are not going well, I have to try and stay calm to lead them well,” he stated.
Rivers United will try to sustain the momentum when they take on San Pedro of Cote d’Ivoire in the return leg of their CAF Champions League preliminary-stage encounter at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, on Sunday.
