The Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED) has given free electricity meters to some government schools in Rivers State as part of its 2026 Corporate Social Responsibility programme.
This effort took place at Government Model Secondary School, GRA, Port Harcourt. It also included a session about safety for students and school staff.
PHED said the programme is meant to make schools safer and cut down on accidents caused by the use of electricity.
After the event held recently, the PHED Head of Communications, Olubukola Olawale, spoke to reporters. She said the project shows the company’s dedication to helping the communities it works with.
She said PHED has responsibilities beyond just collecting electricity bills. She said the company also looks for ways to make a difference in society.

Olawale explained that the schools chosen were picked because PHED checked their needs and their ability to look after the meters.
She said the schools were also told about the importance of keeping the equipment safe and not trying to change the meters.
She warned school leaders not to let untrained people work on the meters. She said proper care will make sure the meters work as they should.
Olawale said PHED wants to do the kind of work in schools in Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states. Those are places where PHED also has operations.
The electricity company said the project is part of its plan to make sure electricity is used safely. It also wants to help institutions and make the learning environment better for students.
