The Rivers State Government has urged Nigerian youths to use dialogue, critical thinking and peaceful engagement to resolve disagreements rather than resorting to violence or disorder.
The Commissioner for Education, Dr. Peters Nwagor, gave the advice on Monday while representing Governor Siminalayi Fubara at the opening of the 13th All Nigeria Universities Debate Championship, ANUDC 2026, at the Rivers State University in Port Harcourt.
Speaking on the theme, “Reason Over Anarchy: Raising A Generation That Wins With Words,” Dr. Nwagor said the theme was relevant to the challenges facing the country.
He stressed the need to develop young Nigerians who can settle differences through sound arguments and constructive discussions instead of aggression.
The Commissioner said debating helps students develop important skills such as logical reasoning, listening, evidence-based arguments, effective communication, and the ability to remain calm under pressure.

He encouraged the participants to see the competition as more than a contest, but as an avenue to learn how to respect and engage people with different opinions.
Dr. Nwagor also commended the Rivers State University and its Vice-Chancellor, Professor Isaac Zeb-Obipi, for hosting the national debate championship.
Declaring the event open, Professor Zeb-Obipi urged the students to approach the competition with open minds, confidence and critical thinking, noting that every participant had an opportunity to express their views with pride.
The 13th All Nigeria Universities Debate Championship brings together university students from across the country to promote critical thinking, leadership and constructive national discourse.
