Rivers Urban Renewal Gains Recognition as Commissioner Hart Receives 2026 Award

The Rivers State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Amaopusenibo Sir Amairigha Edward Hart, has received the “Most Distinguished Commissioner of the Year 2026” award from the Niger Delta Media Practitioners of Nigeria.

The award was presented to Hart at his office in Port Harcourt on Tuesday in recognition of his performance in workers’ welfare, inter-ministerial collaboration and the implementation of the state government’s urban renewal programme.

Speaking during the presentation, the Convener of the Niger Delta Media Practitioners of Nigeria, Ambassador Joseph Aomeji, said the honour was based on what he described as the commissioner’s contributions to the urban renewal agenda of the Rivers State Government.

Aomeji said the initiative was already contributing to efforts to restore Port Harcourt’s reputation as the “Garden City,” citing developments in city beautification and horticulture.

He also identified improved workers’ welfare, stakeholder engagement, accountability, transparency, administrative effectiveness, regulatory compliance and revenue generation as factors behind the award.

Responding, Commissioner Hart dedicated the award to God and Governor Siminalayi Fubara, saying the recognition reflected the administration’s broader commitment to urban renewal and sustainable development.

“Every milestone we have achieved in urban renewal, metropolitan revitalization, city beautification, and sustainable planning is a direct reflection of His Excellency’s commitment to the growth and development of Rivers State,” Hart said.

The commissioner said the award also represented a reminder of the responsibilities ahead, adding that he accepted the honour on behalf of the management and staff of the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development.

He pledged that the ministry would continue to operate with transparency and an open-door policy while supporting the developmental objectives of the state government.

Hart also called for continued collaboration between the ministry and the media, particularly in informing residents about government initiatives, highlighting areas of development and promoting sustainable urban development across Rivers State and the Niger Delta.

The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, TPL Mrs Soibitein Duke Harry, described the award as “most deserving.”

She said the ministry had recorded significant progress since Hart assumed office in March and assured that staff would continue to support efforts to sustain the momentum.

The event also featured the nomination of Commissioner Hart as Grand Patron of the Niger Delta Media Practitioners of Nigeria.
