As MTN Group marks 25 years of operations in Nigeria, public analyst Johnmartins Ijere has called on the Federal Government to undertake a comprehensive review of the activities of telecommunications companies operating in the country.
Speaking on the telecom industry’s 25 years of operations in Port Harcourt, Ijere lamented that many Nigerian subscribers have continued to express concerns over rising data costs, poor network coverage, inconsistent service delivery and what they described as inadequate value for money despite increasing telecom tariffs.
He also raised concerns about the alleged reliance on contract staff by telecom operators, urging authorities to examine employment practices within the sector and assess their impact on Nigerian workers and the economy.

According to him, regulators should pay closer attention to operators’ pricing policies, quality of service, employment standards and overall contribution to national development.
Ijere further advocated stronger government support for indigenous telecommunications companies, stating that Globacom could become more competitive if provided with a level playing field.
He said MTN’s 25th anniversary presents an opportunity for policymakers and stakeholders to evaluate whether Nigerian consumers are receiving adequate value for the services provided by telecom operators.
