A torrential overnight rainfall has caused widespread flooding in Agbarho, Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, leaving the Agbarho High Court, homes, business premises and major roads submerged.
The heavy downpour, which lasted for several hours into Friday morning, overwhelmed drainage channels and inundated several parts of the community, disrupting commercial activities and restricting vehicular and pedestrian movement.
Among the worst-hit areas were Orhokpokpor, Ehwere, Ughrwughelli and Oviri communities, where floodwaters swept through residential neighbourhoods and commercial centres, forcing residents to abandon their homes and businesses.
The Agbarho High Court was also flooded, raising concerns over access to justice, the safety of judicial facilities and the vulnerability of public infrastructure to recurring seasonal flooding.
Residents reported extensive damage to household property, including furniture, electrical appliances, clothing and food items, while traders lamented heavy losses after floodwaters invaded their shops.
Many blamed the recurring flooding on inadequate drainage systems and blocked waterways, calling on the government to address the long-standing environmental challenge.
One resident described the incident as an annual nightmare, saying families struggled to salvage their belongings as floodwaters rapidly entered their homes. A trader also decried the destruction of goods, describing the losses as a major setback to business.
Although no deaths had been reported at the time of filing this report, several families were temporarily displaced, while others spent hours evacuating floodwater and cleaning up damaged property.
Environmental experts said the incident underscores the urgent need for sustainable flood-control measures, including the construction and maintenance of efficient drainage systems, regular desilting of waterways and improved waste management to prevent blocked drains.
The latest flooding has renewed calls on the Delta State Government and relevant emergency management agencies to implement lasting solutions to protect flood-prone communities, especially as heavy rainfall is expected to continue during the peak of the rainy season.
As the floodwaters gradually recede, affected residents are assessing the extent of their losses and appealing for urgent government intervention to prevent future occurrences and safeguard lives and property.
