Chippa United chairman Siviwe “Chippa” Mpengesi has expressed confidence that Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali will play a key role in the club’s ambitions for the 2026/27 South African Premiership season following his return to the Eastern Cape outfit.
The club boss described the Nigerian international as an important figure whose experience and leadership will strengthen the squad ahead of the new campaign.
Nwabali recently rejoined Chippa United after spending several months away from the club following the collapse of an anticipated transfer to Europe.
The goalkeeper had previously announced his departure in search of a new challenge, but returned after a proposed move failed to materialise.
Chippa United welcomed him back with a statement praising his professionalism and influence within the dressing room.
Speaking on the goalkeeper’s return, Mpengesi dismissed suggestions that there were lingering issues between the player and the club.
He insisted that Chippa United had always valued Nwabali and was delighted to have him back ahead of the new season.
The chairman added that the Nigerian remains one of the finest goalkeepers in the South African Premiership and believes his presence will inspire confidence throughout the squad.
Nwabali wasted little time making an impact after his return. He helped Chippa United lift the Eastern Cape pre-season tournament, producing impressive performances, including a decisive penalty save during the competition.
His displays have reassured supporters that he is ready to reclaim his position as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.
The 30-year-old earned widespread recognition with the Super Eagles during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where his outstanding performances helped Nigeria reach the final.
Since then, he has established himself as one of the country’s most dependable goalkeepers and remains a key member of the national team setup.
Mpengesi also expressed optimism that Nwabali’s return would benefit both the player and the club. He noted that the familiar environment would allow the goalkeeper to rediscover his best form while helping Chippa United compete more effectively in the upcoming league campaign.
With the new season fast approaching, Chippa United are hopeful that Nwabali’s experience, leadership and shot-stopping ability will prove crucial as the club aims to improve on last season’s performance.
For the Super Eagles star, the return offers an opportunity to maintain regular playing time while continuing to strengthen his position as Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper ahead of future international assignments.
