The Senate has moved forward with two plans to make Nigeria stronger in the digital world after a meeting where many people from the technology sector showed their support.
The plan is to see social media companies that work in Nigeria have actual offices in the country, and also to create a National Artificial Intelligence Academy to help Nigerians learn digital skills and come up with new ideas.
The public meeting was organized by the Senate Committee on ICT and Cyber Security where they talked about changing the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023 which was proposed by Senator Ned Nwoko. Senator Yemi Adaramodu on the other hand also suggested to create the National AI Academy in Omuo-Ekiti, Ekiti State, and the lawmakers think these plans will help Nigeria’s digital economy grow while also making sure that the country has rules and regulations in place.
Senator Shuaib Afolabi Salisu, the chairman of the Senate Committee on ICT and Cyber Security said that these plans show that the National Assembly is serious about making sure Nigeria’s digital economy is strong. He said that making social media companies have offices in Nigeria will help the government work with them better and also protect the people who use their services.
The people who support the National AI Academy plan think it will help Nigerians learn skills in artificial intelligence, machine learning and other new technologies. The law makers believe the academy will also encourage people to come up with ideas start their own businesses and help Nigeria compete with other countries in the digital world.
Many people at the meeting said that Nigeria needs to improve its infrastructure and rules so it can take advantage of new technologies like artificial intelligence. As a matter of fact, Nigeria needs to find a balance between letting people come up with ideas and keeping peoples information safe.
The Senate thinks that both plans are in line with Nigeria’s plan to become more digital. The lawmakers are hopeful that these plans will make investors more confident improve how the digital world is governed and create opportunities for the country to grow economically through innovation.
Now the plans will move on to the step. If they become laws they will help Nigeria control big technology companies better while also helping the country become more skilled in intelligence. This will help Nigeria become more independent in the world and develop its technology in the long run. Nigeria and the National Artificial Intelligence Academy will play a role in this. Nigeria will become stronger, in the world with the National Artificial Intelligence Academy and the new laws.
