The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has called for stronger collaboration among telecommunications regulators across Africa to address shared industry challenges and improve the quality of digital services on the continent.
The NCC Executive Vice Chairman, Dr. Aminu Maida, made the call during the Heads of Regulators Roundtable at the African Telecommunications Union (ATU) Conference of Plenipotentiaries (CPL-26) held in Abuja.
Maida said cooperation among regulators has become necessary as African countries continue to expand digital infrastructure and manage emerging challenges affecting the telecommunications sector.
He identified infrastructure development, cybersecurity, affordability, satellite services, network resilience and the growth of artificial intelligence technologies as some of the common issues confronting regulators across the continent.
The NCC chief executive said although countries operate under different legal and market conditions, regulators can benefit from sharing experiences and lessons from their respective environments.
He said knowledge exchange among regulatory authorities should become more deliberate and structured to enable faster responses to complex telecommunications challenges.
Speaking on the roundtable theme, “Building Africa’s Network Intelligence Ecosystem for Evidence-Based Regulation,” Maida said collaboration would help regulators make more informed decisions using data and market intelligence.
The NCC Executive Commissioner, Stakeholder Management, Rimini Makama, said the increasing complexity of digital ecosystems requires regulators to move beyond traditional approaches and adopt new methods of managing the sector.
The NCC said the engagement forms part of efforts by African telecommunications regulators to promote regional cooperation, strengthen digital networks and build a more innovative and consumer-focused communications environment.
