16 Hours at Sea: How 47 Oil Rig Workers Survived a Harrowing Atlantic Ocean Ordeal

What was intended to be a long-awaited homecoming turned into a 16-hour battle for survival in the Atlantic Ocean on Sunday, July 12, 2026, when a crew change vessel carrying 47 offshore oil workers suffered catastrophic total engine failure amid violent high seas.

The crew members, who had spent nearly two months offshore completing extended shifts, were stranded in a dangerous maritime zone known as Breakwater Point where colliding freshwater and saltwater currents generated waves up to three stories high.

The vessel lost power just 20 minutes after departing the offshore rig at 3:00 p.m. With onboard communication systems compromised, the crew relied on a faint mobile network signal to transmit an emergency distress call. Although a rescue vessel arrived around 6:00 p.m., severe ocean swells repeatedly snapped towing lines in six consecutive retrieval attempts, leaving both ships helpless as night fell.

“A towering white wall of water, easily the height of a three-story building, came racing toward us,” recalled one of the survivors, Chef Tee (Tony Nnandoo). “The wave crashed over us with unbelievable force, throwing the vessel around so violently that many of us genuinely believed we were about to capsize.”

As massive waves repeatedly slammed the vessel, stranded workers clung to structural steel rods, sang hymns, and prayed in the dark. Fearing the ship would capsize, several workers managed to send final distress messages and farewell phone calls to family members ashore.

The vessel finally navigated clear of the volatile breakwater zone around 11:45 p.m. However, the crew endured hours of torrential rain and freezing winds while standing on the deck throughout the night as the rescue boat slowly towed the disabled vessel toward land.

The ship safely docked at 7:00 a.m. the following morning, ending a nearly 16-hour ordeal. Although several workers suffered minor physical injuries and emotional exhaustion, all 47 personnel onboard survived and were reunited with their families.
