National Union of Rivers State Students NURSS, has demanded the immediate payment of scholarships, bursaries and grants to eligible Rivers State students.
NURSS made this demand on Thursday, June 2, 2026, during an advocacy visit to the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Nwagor Peters. The association informed the education commissioner of critical issues affecting students of the state.
The National President, Comrade Uranta Justice Sunday, who led other executives on the visit reaffirmed his steadfastness in championing the welfare and interests of every Rivers State student.
Uranta, who spoke on behalf of the delegation also demanded for urgent renovation of student hostels in all state-owned tertiary institutions.
The NURSS president expressed dismay over the deteriorating state of the hostels at the Rivers State College of Health Science and Management Technology, RIVCOSMAT.
He called for the construction of a standard sports complex for Rivers State students to promote talent development, healthy competition, and youth empowerment.
Other demands made by NURSS during the strategic meeting with the commissioner were, “improved welfare policies and sustained government support for Rivers State students.

“A monthly or annual subvention to the National Union of Rivers State Students (NURSS) Worldwide – National Secretariat to strengthen the Union’s capacity to effectively represent and serve students across the state.”
The association expressed hope that “His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, the Governor of Rivers State, has been duly briefed by the Honourable Commissioner for Education and that appropriate actions will be taken to address these genuine concerns.
“To every Rivers State student, I want to assure you that this administration will never relent in defending your interests.
“We will continue to engage constructively with government, advocate for better opportunities, and work tirelessly to ensure that the voices of Rivers State students are heard and respected.
“This engagement also further reaffirm our position as the legitimate and authentic leadership of the National Union of Rivers State Students (NURSS) Worldwide – National Secretariat, committed to selfless service, accountability, and results.
“Together, we will continue to build a brighter future for every Rivers State student.”
