The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has recognized Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) as essential technologies for enhancing business efficiency, fostering innovation, and supporting Nigeria’s goal of establishing a $1 trillion digital economy.
Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NCC, conveyed this information during the 17th edition of Nigeria Communications Week and Africa’s Beacon of ICT Merit and Leadership Award, which took place in Lagos.
Speaking through Toluwalase Modele Rufai, the Acting Controller of the NCC Lagos Office, Maida stated that AI and IoT have progressed from being emerging technologies to becoming significant tools that enhance productivity, lower operational costs, and create competitive advantages across various sectors.
In his remarks on the theme, “Impact of AI and IoT on Business Operational Efficiency,” he emphasized that these technologies are vital to Nigeria’s economic transformation agenda.
”This year’s theme is not only timely but also of great significance. As Nigeria propels itself towards a $1 trillion digital economy, Artificial Intelligence and the Internet of Things have transitioned from being futuristic ideas to current catalysts for productivity, cost optimization, and competitive edge across all sectors,” he remarked.
He noted that AI-driven predictive analytics is enabling manufacturers to foresee equipment failures before they happen, thereby minimizing downtime and maintenance expenses, while IoT-enabled sensors are enhancing agricultural productivity through real-time soil condition monitoring.
Furthermore, he mentioned that interconnected technologies are revolutionizing logistics and supply chain management by increasing visibility, reducing delays, cutting operational costs, and improving customer satisfaction.
”In sectors such as banking, healthcare, smart cities, manufacturing, and governance, these technologies are optimizing operations, automating routine tasks, and facilitating data-driven decision-making that was unimaginable just a decade ago.
Maida emphasized that the effective implementation of AI and IoT is significantly reliant on the presence of robust and high-capacity telecommunications infrastructure.
He stated that the NCC has made coordinated spectrum resources accessible to facilitate mobile broadband, fixed wireless access, and IoT services. Furthermore, the 2026–2030 Spectrum Roadmap is anticipated to generate further opportunities for broadband growth and the development of emerging technologies.
”With broadband penetration surpassing 52 percent and the increasing adoption of 4G and 5G, these initiatives improve spectrum management efficiency, foster innovation, ensure regulatory stability, and align Nigeria with global best practices,” he remarked.
