Rivers at 59: Governor Fubara reaffirms commitment to peace, unity

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has reiterated his administration’s dedication to peace, unity, security, and inclusive development as the state celebrates its 59th anniversary.

In a goodwill message issued on Wednesday, May 27, 2026 by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Onwuka Nzeshi, Governor Fubara acknowledged the resilience of Rivers people despite various challenges, noting that their enduring spirit of unity has remained the bedrock of the state since its creation.

The governor highlighted the strong bond of brotherhood among the state’s diverse ethnic nationalities, including the Ijaw, Ikwerre, Ogoni, Etche, Ekpeye, Andoni, Kalabari and others, describing it as Rivers State’s greatest strength and foundation for lasting peace and progress.

“Rivers State has continued to play a pivotal role in Nigeria’s economy for decades, not just because of its rich oil and gas resources, but more importantly through the exceptional contributions of its people in academia, law, business, entertainment, public service, and sports,” the governor said.

Governor Fubara assured residents that his administration would sustain policies and programmes aimed at promoting peace, protecting lives and property, and ensuring even development across all local government areas.

He stressed that governance must remain people-centred and impactful, with no part of the state left behind.

The governor while paying tribute to the state’s founding leaders and elders for their role in nurturing unity and coexistence over the years, urged youths in the state to stay hopeful, responsible, and committed to building a better state through innovation, hard work, and patriotism.

The State Chief Executive equally recognised the critical contributions of women as pillars of families and communities, describing them as indispensable partners in the state’s growth and stability.

He called on all Rivers indigenes to use the anniversary as an opportunity for reflection and a renewed pledge to peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, and collective progress, adding that the unity and future of the state must transcend personal and political interests.

Rivers State was created on May 27, 1967, from the defunct Eastern Region by the then military administration of General Yakubu Gowon, when 12 states were carved out of the former four regions in the country.
