Rivers Pledges Better Primary Healthcare, Embraces Federal Oversight

The Rivers State Government has renewed its resolve to strengthen primary healthcare services, improve health outcomes, and ensure sustainable funding across the sector.

The State Deputy Governor, Ngozi Nma Odu, gave the assurance during an oversight visit by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare under the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund at Government House, Port Harcourt.

She described the Federal Government’s monitoring framework as vital for promoting accountability, collaboration, and improved healthcare delivery nationwide. According to her, the involvement of stakeholders at both policy and facility levels reflects a collective commitment to making primary healthcare the foundation for achieving universal health coverage.

While acknowledging the positive assessment of the state’s performance, Prof. Odu stressed the need to sustain progress. She noted that although the commendation is encouraging, the government remains focused on doing more to strengthen the system.

She reaffirmed that the administration of Governor Siminalayi Fubara is committed to the prudent use of BHCPF resources, particularly through the Primary Healthcare Development Agency to boost service delivery.

Prof. Odu added that the impact of the fund extends beyond financing to include improved governance, accountability, and measurable health gains, especially for mothers, children, and vulnerable groups.

To maintain momentum, she said the state will focus on improving data systems, upgrading health facilities, enhancing service quality, and integrating financing strategies for long-term sustainability.

Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary of the State Ministry of Health, Justina Jumbo, emphasized the need for effective utilization of funds and improved access to quality healthcare services, urging stakeholders to contribute meaningfully to ongoing reforms.

Earlier, the leader of the federal steering committee for BHCPF gateways, Dakum Longji, commended the Fubara administration’s political will and expressed satisfaction with the state’s performance in primary healthcare delivery.
