Dental Association Moves to Curb Fake Oral Products

The Chairman of the Nigerian Dental Association in Rivers State, Dr. Franklyn Ifidon, says the National Oral Health Strategic Plan is currently under review to strengthen collaboration with state ministries of health.

He explained that the move is aimed at improving enforcement and tackling the activities of unqualified practitioners who sell unapproved dental products.

Dr. Ifidon made this known in an interview with our correspondent as part of activities marking World Oral Health Day, observed annually on March 20.

He expressed concern over poor oral hygiene practices among residents, noting that many people still use harmful and unapproved products, which can damage the teeth and gums.

Despite ongoing awareness campaigns, he said the problem persists, urging Nigerians to use only fluoride-containing toothpaste to protect their teeth.

He also advised regular oral care habits, including brushing after breakfast and before bedtime, flossing to remove food particles, and visiting a dentist at least twice a year.

According to him, the policy review will also promote the deployment of dental professionals to primary healthcare centres, especially in rural communities, to improve access to oral care services.

Speaking on activities lined up for the 2026 celebration, Dr. Ifidon said the association carried out school outreach programmes across Port Harcourt, where students received oral health education, screenings, and free dental care items.

He added that due to the Eid al-Fitr celebrations, a health walk will now take place on March 23 at Rumuokoro Market, where free dental services such as scaling and polishing will be offered.

This year’s theme is “A Healthy Mouth is a Healthy Life.”
