Ikwerre Women Celebrate IWD, Promote Girls’ Education

Women in the Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State gathered on Thursday to mark International Women’s Day 2026, emphasising the importance of prioritising girls’ education.

The event took place in Isiokpo, the administrative centre of Ikwerre Local Government Area. Christina Wobodo, the wife of the Ikwerre Local Government Area Chairman, encouraged parents to provide their children with education and essential skills to foster their confidence, knowledge, and leadership abilities.

She was represented at the event by Ethel Ginika, the Vice Chairman of Ikwerre Local Government Area. She mentioned that the celebration also acts as a call for increased efforts towards achieving gender equality.

She added that this year’s theme is “Rights, Justice, Action for All Women and Girls,” while stating that the “Give to Gain” idea promotes generosity and cooperation as vital means of achieving gender equality.

In her view, giving often results in increased opportunities and benefits for women in society.

During her speech, Dr Chinyere Mmom, the wife of the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Environmental Technology (FUET) in Ogoni, Rivers State, emphasised the importance of educating young girls to foster innovation.

“When you give, you should also anticipate receiving something in return.”

She expressed gratitude to Wobodo for hosting an awareness talk show designed to educate women in the Ikwerre Local Government Area.

Additionally, Mirian Ogbonna, the Woman Leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State, encouraged women to take action. She mentioned that demonstrating respect can assist women in gaining acknowledgement and appropriate roles within their families.

She praised women for their endurance, remarking that patience frequently yields beneficial outcomes.

Key moments of the event included sharing of food, wrappers, and cash with Renewed Hope women from the 13 wards of Ikwerre Local Government Area. The event also included the cutting of a birthday cake in honour of Dr Chinyere Mmom.
