Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of renowned football administrator and former Super Eagles head coach Festus Adegboye Onigbinde, who died at the age of 88.
In a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President sympathised with the family, associates and the entire Nigerian football community over the loss of the respected sports icon. The statement noted that the veteran coach passed away on Monday, leaving behind a rich legacy of service and dedication to the development of football in Nigeria.
President Tinubu also extended his condolences to the Nigeria Football Federation, the National Sports Commission, professional colleagues and football fans across the country who admired the late coach for his immense contributions to the sport.
The President described Onigbinde as a disciplined and visionary leader who distinguished himself as one of the pioneers of indigenous football coaching in Nigeria. He recalled that the respected tactician made history as the first indigenous coach to lead the Nigeria national football team in 1982, demonstrating remarkable leadership and commitment to the growth of the national team.
Tinubu also commended the Modakeke high chief for his dedication to grassroots football and for strengthening football administration in Nigeria. According to the President, Onigbinde played a crucial role in nurturing young talents and promoting professionalism within the Nigerian game.
The late coach’s achievements also include guiding the Super Eagles to the final of the Africa Cup of Nations in 1984, a milestone that cemented his reputation as one of the most respected football managers in Nigeria’s history.
Describing him as a man of discipline, integrity and foresight with deep passion for the round leather game, President Tinubu said Onigbinde would be remembered for the lasting impact he made on Nigerian football and the generations of players and coaches he inspired.
The President prayed for the peaceful repose of the departed and asked God to grant comfort and strength to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.
