Fubara Donates ₦100m to 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Emblem Fund

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, on Tuesday 23 December launched the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Emblem Appeal Fund with a personal donation of ₦100 million, urging Nigerians to extend greater support to families of fallen heroes and retired military personnel.

Speaking at the ceremony held at Government House, Port Harcourt, Governor Fubara emphasised the need for sustained assistance to those who sacrificed for the nation’s unity and stability.

He described the theme for the 2026 celebration, “Sacrifice and Unity: Honouring Our Heroes,” as apt and reflective of the immense contributions of servicemen and women.

Fubara highlighted that retired soldiers had dedicated prime years of their lives to defending the country and maintaining peace, adding that honouring them was a collective responsibility.

To underscore his administration’s commitment, the governor announced the ₦100 million donation, representing a 150 per cent increase from the ₦40 million contributed by the state in the previous year’s appeal.

He directed the Nigerian Legion in Rivers State to submit names of 50 wards for employment opportunities, fulfilling a promise made last year to provide jobs for dependents of legionnaires.

Additionally, Fubara assured that construction of the Legion’s permanent secretariat, currently underway, would be completed in 2026.

The event signals the commencement of activities leading to the main Armed Forces Remembrance Day on January 15, 2026, with calls for corporate bodies and individuals to support the fund for veterans’ welfare.
