Troost-Ekong Abandons Super Eagles

Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong told the team his decision to quit soon after they lost to DR Congo in a CAF 2026 World Cup final Playoffs.

‎The Al-Kholood Central defender said he will only be in Morocco to cheer the team and wished them well at the tournament.

‎The 32-year old defence sensational had hoped to lead Nigeria to a 2025 AFCON triumph as well as the 2026 World Cup.

‎From a clear count, 2025 will be the 10th year William Troost-Ekong has been playing as a central defender for Nigeria, he made his Super Eagles debut against Tchad in an AFCON qualifier in Kaduna.

‎However, speculations have it that the youngster Benjamin Fredrick has already taken Ekong’s place in the heart of the Super Eagles back four.

‎Aina Quit notice

‎Unfortunately, the super Eagles of Nigeria has entered into it’s shambolic phase as Ola Aina could well be the next key player to throw in the towel after captain William Ekong after he openly expressed his disappointment to the NFF president Ibrahim Gusau how he was abandoned when he was injured on international duty.

‎It has been claimed that Super Eagles fullback “Ola (Aina) is seriously considering quitting the Super Eagles.

‎This is as a result of the fact that the player was far from being happy when he was abandoned after he got injured playing for the Super Eagles.

‎It was confirmed that Ola Aina confronted the NFF president on this, clearly disappointed with how he was left on his own even though he was injured on national service.”

‎In the month of September, the Nottingham Forest defender, Pinpointed as one of the standout stars in the Premier League last season with a scintillating form, suffered a hamstring injury that needed surgery when he played against South Africa in Bloemfontein.

‎It was claimed that Ola Aina’s bad treatment was part of the grudges of the Super Eagles when they staged a pay strike before their 2026 World Cup Playoffs tie against Gabon in Rabat, Morocco.

‎It was however, on this note that the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) president embarked on a fence-mending visit to Ola Aina at his base in England thereafter.

‎After their discussion, it is now left to be seen whether this visit has pacified the player to drop the idea of turning his back on the Super Eagles.
