Onunu Festival 2025: Where Food, Culture, And Entertainment Meet

The Onunu Festival in Port Harcourt has quickly grown into one of the city’s most beloved cultural gatherings, a celebration that brings together food, music, dance, and the vibrant spirit of the Rivers people.

What began as a dedicated effort to spotlight the iconic Onunu delicacy—made from yam, ripe plantain, and palm oil—has blossomed into a full cultural carnival that draws thousands of residents, celebrities, creatives, and lovers of heritage.

Created by culture promoter Belema Nelson Onikio, popularly known as Onunuboy, the festival transformed Port Harcourt into a living canvas of color, drumbeats, and cultural pride. Attendees described the event as a perfect blend of tradition and contemporary carnival flair, with masquerades, dancers, musicians, and families filling the space with laughter and unity.

The previous edition, held on the 8th of December and themed “HEROES,” was one of the most memorable yet. A number of notable personalities added prestige and excitement to the 2024 festival. Dame Ibinabo Fiberesima, well-known actress and model, graced the celebration and even sponsored guests who attended, helping to spread love and inclusivity.

Veteran actress activist, and politician Hilda Dokubo also joined the festivities, dancing and engaging with the crowd in her signature energetic style. Hilary Maduba became the star of the day when his performance earned him a cash award of ₦200,000 from media personality Brian Jonah Dennis, who not only encouraged performers but also generously shared free plates of Onunu with attendees.

Cultural singer Sophyn delivered electrifying performances that grounded the celebration in true Rivers tradition, while the charismatic duo of Kobo Medlyn and Emmanuel Nengi Obelley anchored the event as hosts, adding warmth, humor, and a smooth flow to the day’s activities.

As the city looks ahead, preparations for the 2025 Onunu Festival have already begun, promising an even bigger and more immersive experience. Scheduled for the 7th of December 2025 at the Model Secondary School Field in GRA, Port Harcourt, the upcoming edition aims to push the celebration to a new level.

The mission remains the same: to promote the Onunu delicacy to the world, boost cultural tourism, and unite people through a shared love for heritage.

With each passing year, the Onunu Festival grows not only in scale but in significance. It has become a symbol of Rivers pride, a space where tradition meets innovation, and a platform that gives voice to local talents.
