Editorial: Is Rivers State becoming too dangerous for Policemen?

The incessant killing of Policemen on duty in Rivers State has become a monthly event. Worse still, those who have made these monthly events a success have never been caught or arrested. These facts leave residents wondering whether the Police command in the state is really ready to protect them or should they seek a further alternative.

In July alone, there have been two fatal shootings involving policemen on duty with a total of five policemen losing their lives on the process.

On the 12th of July, theportcitynews.com reported of the killing of two policemen while one survived but was in critical conditions.

The Rivers State police command through its public relations officer, Nnamdi Omoni, stated that the police will leave no stone unturned until they arrest the perpetrators of such dastardly acts.

On the 25th of July, at least 3 policemen stationed close to the eternal filling station at Rumuigbo, were killed by a yet to be identified gunmen who also escaped with ammunitions belonging to the murdered policemen.

In May, at least two policemen were killed during an armed robbery attack. Another 3 policemen were killed same month in the same area while a SARS operative was killed at Bori 11 days after his wedding..

These unresolved murders of security agents in Rivers State leave much to be desired and speak volume of the capability of the police to keep the state safe in the build-up to the 2019 general elections.

Theportcitynews believe that the police command in the state has not deployed its assets to ensure credible intelligence gathering that will stem the criminal tides ravaging the state.

In the era of massive complains about F-SARS brutalities against the youths in the state, policemen are dying in their numbers with most of the killing still unresolved.

The police should show a certain level of aggressiveness in these unwarranted provocations. Residents in Rivers State should feel safe and have confidence in the ability of the command to protect them.

The IGP Monitoring team have been proactive in resolving some of the murders in the state. They should be encouraged to do more.

While the IGP monitoring team have arrested the killers of the Rumuolumeni DPO and the killer of a Navy officer and his girlfriend, there are several murders involving innocent residents that have not been resolved. Families are waiting and hoping for miracles. The Police should show working and work in sync with other security agents to ensure maximum protection of lives and properties.
