Rivers State Boosts Healthcare Access, Earns Praise from Federal Lawmakers

The Rivers State Ministry of Health has reaffirmed its commitment to revitalizing and expanding healthcare access across the state, particularly in underserved and rural communities.

Speaking during an oversight visit by the House of Representatives Committee on Healthcare Services, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Professor Justina Jumbo, highlighted key strides made under the state’s healthcare initiatives. The committee was in the state to assess the utilization and impact of the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund.

Professor Jumbo emphasized the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to strengthen primary healthcare delivery and improve service availability for all residents.

Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Amos Gumna-Mogagi, commended the state government and the Ministry for notable improvements, especially in primary healthcare infrastructure and staffing. He expressed satisfaction with the presence of doctors in many facilities, despite the nationwide shortage of health professionals.

“It’s quite impressive that a state can mobilize doctors despite the scarcity of human resources in the health sector. Many of the level-three facilities we visited are functional and well-structured,” Gumna-Mogagi said.

However, he also pointed out the need for digital transformation in the health sector. “Some facilities still lack electronic medical record systems, which are crucial for real-time data and effective health management,” he added.

The lawmaker urged residents to make use of the improved health facilities, stressing the importance of sustainability and community engagement to ensure the infrastructure serves its intended purpose.

The visit marks a positive step in promoting transparency, accountability, and progress in Rivers State’s healthcare system.
