Nigeria Can Host CommonWealth Games- Tinubu

Nigeria has taken a major step in its quest to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, as President Bola Tinubu formally welcomed the Commonwealth Sport Bid Evaluation Committee to Abuja on Thursday, September 18.

Receiving the delegation at the Presidential Villa through his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, the President pledged Nigeria’s readiness to deliver an inclusive and world-class event. Gbajabiamila conveyed Tinubu’s assurance, noting that the President had issued a Letter of Guarantee to back the bid.

Led by Darren Hall, Director of Games and Assurance at Commonwealth Sport, the Evaluation Committee held discussions with top government officials and ministers on Nigeria’s plans. Tinubu stressed that the Commonwealth promotes unity and diversity, adding that Africa deserves its first opportunity to host the Games after nearly 100 years.

No African country has ever staged the Games since they began in 1930. Nigeria’s attempt to host the 2014 edition failed, while Durban, South Africa, won the 2022 rights but later withdrew due to financial issues, paving the way for Birmingham, UK, to step in. Hosting the 2030 Games, officials say, would be a landmark achievement for both Nigeria and Africa.

Tinubu further highlighted his administration’s sports reforms, including the replacement of the Ministry of Sports with the National Sports Commission, aimed at positioning sports as a driver of national growth. Gbajabiamila also encouraged the delegation to experience Nigeria’s renowned hospitality, assuring them of the country’s determination to succeed in the bid.
