Rivers Politics: PDP vs APC Power Play Unfolds

The impending return of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, to office has ignited a heated struggle between two major parties in Nigeria – the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC).

APC has extended an open invitation to Governor Fubara to join its fold on Tuesday 16th September, with the party’s National Director of Publicity, Bala Ibrahim, stating that Fubara’s defection would strengthen the ruling party’s bid to consolidate power ahead of the 2027 elections.

In contrast, the PDP’s Deputy National Legal Adviser, Okechukwu Osuoha, has urged Governor Fubara to prioritize loyalty to the party and work towards restoring peace and stability in the oil-rich state.

Osuoha emphasized the need for Fubara to mend fences with his political benefactors and engage actively in party affairs, highlighting the PDP’s supremacy in Nigeria’s political system.

The struggle between the PDP and APC to keep Governor Fubara has significant implications for the political landscape of Rivers State and Nigeria.

If Governor Siminalayi Fubara responds positively to the PDP’s expectations, it could lead to his loyalty to solidifying his relationship with the party and potentially pave the way for future political collaborations, peace and stability in Rivers State, allowing for more effective governance and a harmonious relationship between the executive and legislative arms, Rivers State might experience renewed development and progress.

On the other hand, if Fubara joins the APC, it could strengthen the APC’s position in Rivers State and potentially give the party an upper hand in the state’s politics, boost the APC’s ambition to secure political control across all states in Nigeria, potentially altering the national political landscape and also lead to a backlash from his former party loyalists and supporters, potentially destabilizing the state’s politics.
