Tobi Amusan Gets 80 Million Naira For Winning Silver Medal

Nigeria’s sprint queen and world record holder, Tobi Amusan, is set to pocket a hefty financial reward following her silver medal heroics at the Tokyo 2025 World Championships.

Amusan stormed back into the global spotlight in the women’s 100m hurdles final, clocking an impressive 12.29 seconds to secure the silver medal.

She finished just behind Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji, who stunned the field by setting a new national record and personal best of 12.24 seconds to clinch gold.

Her podium finish guarantees her a substantial payout. From the World Athletics prize pool, valued at $8,498,000 and distributed across all events, silver medallists earn $35,000 (₦52.5 million), with gold worth $70,000 and bronze $22,000. Finalists from fourth to eighth place also receive prizes ranging from $16,000 to $5,000.

In addition to the official prize money, Amusan benefits from a bonus scheme introduced by Hiracer, Nigeria’s official kit supplier for Tokyo 2025.

Before the championships, the company pledged $30,000 for gold, $20,000 for silver, and $10,000 for bronze.

According to Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) president Tonobok Okowa, the incentive was designed to encourage athletes to give their best on the global stage.

This means Amusan adds Hiracer’s $20,000 (₦30 million) bonus to her official $35,000 earnings, bringing her total windfall to an impressive $55,000 (₦82.5 million).
