Tobi Amusan Wins Silver At World Athletics Championships

Nigeria’s sprint hurdler, Tobi Amusan, secured the silver medal in the women’s 100m hurdles at the Tokyo 2025 World Athletics Championships, clocking a remarkable 12.29 seconds in the final.

Under the lights of the National Stadium, Amusan produced a brilliant run but was narrowly beaten by Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji, who claimed gold in 12.24 seconds, setting a new national record. The bronze medal went to Grace Stark of the United States with a time of 12.34 seconds, while her compatriot Masai Russell settled for fourth in 12.44 seconds.

Further down the field, Poland’s Pia Skrzyszowska and Bahamas’ Devynne Charlton shared fifth place, both clocking season’s bests of 12.49 seconds. Jamaica’s Danielle Williams finished seventh in 12.53 seconds, followed by Nadine Visser of the Netherlands in 12.56 seconds.

Earlier in the day, Amusan had underlined her form by winning her semifinal heat in 12.36 seconds (-0.2), ahead of Visser (12.45) and Skrzyszowska (12.51), to book her spot in the final.

Although the result denied her a second successive world title, Amusan’s silver delivered Nigeria’s first medal at the championships. At 28, the Ogun-born athlete continues to add to an illustrious career that already includes five national titles, three consecutive Diamond League trophies (2021–2023), and her historic world record of 12.12 seconds set in Eugene in 2022, which earned Nigeria its first-ever World Championships gold.

This silver brings Nigeria’s all-time World Championships medal haul to 12, with Amusan still the only athlete from the nation to have struck gold.

The National Sports Commission (NSC) lauded her latest achievement. Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade praised her resilience and consistency, saying:

“Tobi Amusan has once again made Nigeria proud. Winning silver on the world stage is no small feat. Her class, determination, and excellence remain an inspiration to the nation.”
