Tiwa Savage Advocates Tems’ Inclusion In the Afrobeats “Big 3”

The established hierarchy within the Nigerian music industry is facing a fresh critique from one of its most influential voices. Afrobeats superstar Tiwa Savage has publicly questioned the prevailing narrative surrounding the genre’s top-tier artists, specifically targeting the exclusivity of the widely debated “Big 3” title.

This unofficial designation, which typically reserves its spots solely for the male trio of Davido, Wizkid, and Burna Boy, has long been a source of controversy among fans and industry veterans alike. Debates frequently erupt online and in media circles, with seasoned figures often endorsing their personal favourite among the three giants.

However, in a recent interview, Savage shifted the conversation, arguing that the framework itself is outdated and fails to acknowledge the achievements of a key figure.

She pointed to the global impact and critical acclaim of singer Tems, stating that the artist’s profound work and record-breaking accomplishments have unequivocally earned her a place among the genre’s very elite.

“It’s unfair to have that conversation about the Big 3 and not mention someone like Tems,” Tiwa said, highlighting what she perceives as a significant oversight. By making this statement, Savage not only advocates for Tems’ recognition but also challenges the industry to expand its definition of success and influence beyond a traditionally male-centric model, suggesting that a “Big 4” or a more inclusive view might be a more accurate reflection of Afrobeats’ current global landscape.
