Democracy Under Threat: Nigerians Asked to Protect Electoral System

Nigerians have been urged to defend the country’s electoral system and protect its democratic values. The call was made by the International Society for Social Justice and Human Rights.

The Institute praised the people of Rivers State for their peaceful behavior during the just concluded Local Government Area elections in the state.

The Institute’s Chancellor, Dr. Omenazu Jackson, said the people of Rivers State have shown that democracy can’t thrive where there’s manipulation and abuse of power.

“This collective art of peaceful resistance sends a strong signal and message that the people will no longer legitimize illegal constitutional bridges and the hijack of democratic process,Rivers people have shown the world that democracy cannot thrive where abuse of power and manipulation takes center stage” Dr. Jackson said.

Dr. Jackson said the silent rejection of the polls reminded Nigerians that the sovereignty of the people is the cornerstone of democracy.

“We urged democratic Nigerians to stand firm and resist political impurity and defend the sanity of the electoral right and democratic right of the people, the August 30th election serves as a reminder that the sovereignty of the people remains the cornerstone of our democracy” he added.

He added that the message is a call to action for all Nigerians to stand up for their democratic rights and protect the integrity of the electoral system.
