Police Raid Nkpolu Community in Rivers State After Campaign

Residents of Nkpolu community in Obio/Akpor LGA is reeling from a police raid that saw numerous residents, including youths, women, and men, taken into custody. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday afternoon, stemmed from an earlier confrontation involving local youths engaged in an anti-drug campaign.

Reports indicate that the youths, under the leadership of their chairman, Owhondah Chamberlain, had been actively working to combat drug abuse within the community, citing its role in fueling criminal activities. Their efforts, which included handing over apprehended drug sellers to the NDLEA, were reportedly met with resistance.

The police action followed an incident where a police officer and two others were allegedly confronted by the youths for drug use. According to sources, the raid, involving approximately eight police vans, was led by the same officer involved in the earlier confrontation. However, the police have stated that their operation was in response to a reported case of assault and theft filed by a man named Nyian.

As the community grapples with the aftermath of the raid, questions linger regarding the police’s response and the future of the anti-drug campaign. The police have yet to release an official statement on the arrests, leaving residents and observers awaiting further clarification on the situation.
