FIDA Condemns Child Abuse, Calls for Prosecution of Pastor

The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Rivers State Branch, has condemned the alleged dehumanisation and abuse of children by one Pastor Ifediorah Joseph in Eneka, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, under the guise of “spiritual cleansing.”

In a statement on Wednesday, FIDA Rivers described the acts as child abuse, exploitation, and a gross violation of the Child’s Rights Law of Rivers State. The group warned that such practices subject children to trauma, indignity, and long-lasting psychological and physical harm.

“What has been done to these children is heinous and unlawful,” the group said, adding that it was deeply disturbed by the complicity of some parents and guardians who allowed or failed to resist the violations.

FIDA Rivers emphasised that parents have a legal and moral duty to protect their children from abuse, and that hiding under the guise of religion or culture does not absolve them of responsibility.

The organisation reminded the public that children are entitled to protection, dignity, education, healthcare, and safe upbringing as guaranteed by the Nigerian Constitution, the Rivers State Child’s Rights Law, and international treaties including the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child.

The group called on law enforcement agencies to immediately prosecute Pastor Joseph and his accomplices, while also urging parents, guardians, and community leaders to desist from harmful cultural and religious practices.

FIDA further appealed to government agencies, civil society groups, and faith leaders to step up sensitisation on child protection and the legal consequences of abuse.

“FIDA Rivers remains committed to protecting and promoting the rights and welfare of women and children in Rivers State. We will not relent in ensuring that perpetrators are held accountable and that children can grow in safe and nurturing environments,” the group concluded.
