‎National Grid Operator Approved Sungrow Inverters

‎Sungrow, a worldwide supplier of photovoltaic (PV) inverters and energy storage systems, has declared that all dynamic models of its inverters sold in Brazil have obtained official approval from Brazil’s National Electric System Operator (ONS), representing a significant milestone in grid compliance and system reliability.

‎The company stated that the certification verifies that Sungrow’s inverter models fulfill the stringent modeling requirements for electromechanical and electromagnetic transients, thereby ensuring precise dynamic behavior during grid disturbances.

‎This development comes in the wake of a nationwide blackout in August 2023, which revealed weaknesses in inverter-based renewable energy systems. In response, ONS initiated a structured verification program—outlined in Report RAP 0012/2023—to evaluate inverter and power plant controller (PPC) models, concentrating on dynamic performance in situations such as low-voltage ride-through (LVRT) and reactive power support.

‎Sungrow engaged in a multi-stage evaluation process overseen by ONS. The validation process included:

‎Level 1 (L1): Verification of Sungrow’s PSCAD-based electromagnetic transient model, utilizing a semi-physical controller to align simulation results with hardware performance.

‎Level 2 (L2): Development and cross-verification of an ANATEM model for electromechanical transients, ensuring consistency across both simulation environments.

‎The firm indicated that the process required extensive collaboration with ONS and the involvement of local engineers, global R&D teams, and technical consultants to guarantee complete adherence to grid modeling standards.

‎“All types of Sungrow inverters sold in Brazil—including central, string, and modular models—have successfully completed the certification process,” the company stated in a release.

‎“This accomplishment strengthens our dedication to providing grid-compliant, high-performance solutions that enhance the stability of Brazil’s power system,” remarked Ada Li, Vice President of Sungrow Americas.
