The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has mandated employers to shoulder transportation and accommodation costs for corps members deployed to their organizations. The directive was issued by NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, during the 2025 NYSC/Corps Employers’ Workshop held in Bauchi on Thursday.
Represented by the Director of the Northeast Area Office, Agatha Banki, the DG emphasized that employers must either provide transport to pick up corps members from orientation camps or refund their travel expenses. He also stressed the need for comfortable accommodation or monetary equivalents to ensure effective service delivery.
The Key Directives for Employers were:
Transport Support: Employers must arrange pickup from camp or reimburse transport costs, Provision of decent housing or equivalent stipends, Equal medical benefits and conducive workspaces as provided for regular staff.

The annual workshop serves as a platform to strengthen collaboration between NYSC and employers, addressing operational challenges and improving welfare standards. Brig. Gen. Nafiu expressed confidence that the 2025 session would yield actionable solutions to enhance the scheme’s efficiency.
With rising complaints about corps members’ welfare, the policy aims to reduce financial burdens and improve service conditions. Employers failing to comply risk sanctions, including blacklisting from hosting future corps members.
Stakeholders have welcomed the move, citing its potential to boost productivity and accountability. The NYSC reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding corps members’ welfare nationwide.
