NMA Threatens Nationwide Medical Shutdown Over Unmet Demands

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has threatened to halt medical services nationwide if the Federal Government doesn’t meet its demands before the July 23 deadline.

This warning follows a 21-day ultimatum issued on July 2, prompted by a circular from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC) concerning revised allowances for medical and dental officers in the federal public service. The NMA views this circular as a violation of existing agreements and insists on its immediate retraction, among other requests.

According to NMA President, Prof. Bala Audu, the association is ready to act decisively if needed. He stated, “Our stance is clear. If the Federal Government doesn’t respond to our demands by the end of the ultimatum on July 23, we might have to resort to a strike.”

Prof. Audu mentioned that the NMA had engaged in discussions with high-ranking government officials, including the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Pate, and the Minister of State for Health, Dr. Iziaq Salako. However, further meetings were put on hold due to the recent passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The NMA stressed that their demands are critical for the well-being of Nigeria’s healthcare system and the welfare of medical professionals. Failure by the government to address these concerns could lead to significant action, potentially disrupting medical services across the country.
