A male suspect who was earlier charged in court for kidnapping has reportedly been re-arrested by security operatives in Rivers State over his alleged role in the multiple killings after kidnapping.
The suspect, identified as Kelechi Wofuru, was arrested through the efforts of security operatives, in collaboration with the SafeCity Volunteer Foundation.
He was alleged to have been part of a gang responsible for enticing innocent citizens, mostly bus drivers, to secluded spots where they were said to be killed and stripped of their belongings.
This development was shared by the leader of the SafeCity Volunteer Foundation, Harrison Gwamnishu, in a video post on his verified Facebook page on Monday.
He said the suspect was first charged in November 2025 for kidnappings, but he got out of jail, even as the victim from the previous charge had not yet been found.
Mr Gwamnishu he went ahead to kill other people after his release, having claimed at least seven lives.
The human right activist noted that the group committed their crimes along the Port Harcourt-Elele-Isiokpo road and Ubima, where they would lure their victims and subsequently murder them.
The SafeCity leader also disclosed that while the suspect had at first denied having any connection to the crimes, he led the security personnel to a forest area where the body of one of the recent victims, Ifeanyi Ibobo, was found.
According to Gwamnishu, the disappearance of the victim was reported by his family on 5 March, which is Ash Wednesday.
The operation, which was successful through the information obtained from the suspect’s phone, enabled the investigators to find the suspects.
However, videos shared from the operation depicted decomposed body with skeleton remains suspected to belong to yet-to-be-identified victim of the criminal syndicate was found spread out in a bush area.
Gwamnishu urged parents who have disappeared members to file a report to the Rivers State Police Command.
The leader of SafeCity hailed the State Commissioner of Police, the Commander of the Special Intelligence and Operations Unit, and the members of SafeCity for successful apprehension.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer in the state, Grace Iringe-Koko, affirmed the development, saying that investigations were still going on.
